How to sleep: Five ways not getting enough shut-eye damages your health

Sleep is a time when the body repairs, processes and restores itself.

“One of the vital roles of sleep is to help us solidify and consolidate memories,” says the US National Sleep Foundation.

The NHS recommends that you get between seven to nine hours a night.

However, the Sleep Council says that as you get older you will require less sleep.

Over 65s, it says, only need to aim for seven to eight hours a day.
