Care cost ‘catastrophe’ if no cap is put in place, says expert

Sir Andrew Dilnot said people face a “later life care cost lottery” which can force them to sell the family home to pay residential home bills averaging £800 a week.

His review recommended a £35,000 care bill limit and an increase in the means-tested threshold – above which better-off people are liable for full care costs – from £23,250 to £100,000.

But implementation of the 2011 proposals has been repeatedly delayed and earlier this week the Treasury reportedly axed plans to introduce a cap of around £75,000 by 2020.
